There have been two major archaeological excavations at Mackinac Island Historic Downtown Buildings.
The first was the excavation of an early 19th-century privy at the Biddle House in 1972. It was discovered while restoring a later privy and contained a fabulous collection of ceramics.
The second was the excavation of a pre-contact site during the conversion of the Indian Dormitory to the Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum.
