SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program with Composer Brad Sayles
DESCRIPTION:Composer Brad Sayles will focus on the art of audio capture for creating a sound scape encompassing music and effects…and more importantly how the two ultimately imitate and complement themselves. Sayles will plan to focus on the sounds of the island and show how they not only create an environmental perspective\, but also create a musical composition. This presentation would involve playing sound segments individually\, then altered and edited creating rhythm and melody. Sayles will conclude with the addition of mocked up instruments to combine with the sounds to create the final composition. This program will take place in the Station 256 Conference Room\, located above the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program with Abstract Cartographer Eileen Lyons
DESCRIPTION:This two-hour workshop will introduce participants to the natural power and beauty of water using watercolor paints and inks on paper\, in both a traditional and a non-tradition approach. After a brief slideshow showing watercolor images and basic color theory practice\, participants will learn to choose specific colors to create an image they enjoy. In the first demonstration\, participants will learn to create a quick seascape using a traditional watercolor method. For the second demonstration\, AIR will show how an abstract seascape is created using a non-traditional method by manipulating small amounts of poured paint and/or ink on their paper to direct the flow of diluted pigment allowing participants to experience the spontaneous and organic energy of water in motion. Participants will use masking fluid or other resistant materials to preserve white space and will use salt and/or sand to add texture. Participants will leave the workshop with two small pieces of work. This program will take place in the Station 256 Conference Room\, located above the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Program with Calligrapher Jane Ewing
DESCRIPTION:Calligrapher Jane Ewing will give a PowerPoint presentation\, The Fine Art of Calligraphy\, to share their knowledge of and spark interest in the evolution and practice of calligraphy and to explain what distinguishes it from ordinary handwriting. The slides and Ewing’s narrative are an overview of writing systems and scripts from different cultures and periods throughout history from East Asian characters to Western alphabets\, introduce the tools and materials found in a calligrapher’s studio\, explore historical alphabets\, and end with images of extraordinary lettering from contemporary\, master calligraphers. \nEwing creates not only two-dimensional art but design and construct hand-lettered artist’s books in which nature is the topic for their text and images. The theme of Ewing’s recent books is in praise of water. Ewing swims in Lake Michigan twelve months of the year and reveres every aspect of a body of water. The scope of other books Ewing created ranges from the life of trees to the character of rocks and stones. Ewing will give a workshop demonstrating the process of making an artist’s book and guiding the participants to create their own. One format would be a concertina [accordion] book made from a paper strip which is folded in sections to make pages that can then be stacked over one another to create a foldout book. Each person will design and create an art book in which to document what is meaningful to them on Mackinac Island\, identifying its natural wonders. All ages are welcome. This is a free program located in the Station 256 Conference Room\, located above the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center.
