Artist-in-Residence Workshop with Plein-Air Artist Kristin Hosbein

Kristin Hosbein has been painting in the plein-air tradition for the past eleven years, capturing what she sees from a unique perspective. Her paintings are recognized by her gestural brushwork, innovative use of color, and light-filled compositions. The messages within her paintings are simple and singular: a moment, a memory, or an impression. Her style of painting is contemporary realism, with roots in impressionism, working mostly in oil.

She will hold a half-day demo with a short lecture/Powerpoint presentation “Brief Introduction to Plein Air Painting”, with a short visual talk about the history of the outdoor painting including Impressionists, historical North American groups of painters and some examples of styles of contemporary plein air artists. She will include hand-outs of how to get started in PleinAir painting, including materials, set-up and reference books. She will also do a two hour demo from a photograph to demonstrate basic techniques so that beginning artists have the opportunity to ask questions and see an example in process.

This workshop will be held in the lower level of The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum. This is a free Mackinac Parks: 125 event!

A Day in the Park Open House and Reception

Join us in celebrating 125 years of Mackinac Island State Park as captured in art. “A Day in the Park” will be celebrated with awards and reception outside The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum. This event is open and free to the public. Co-sponsored by Mackinac Associates and the Mackinac Arts Council.

For this special anniversary exhibition we encouraged artists working in all media to share with us their artistic visions of Mackinac Island State Park. Subjects may be historic buildings, dramatic limestone formations, tranquil vistas, forested trails, water views, or whatever subject best captures the artist’s vision of Michigan’s first State Park.
