DESCRIPTION:The sun sets on the Straits of Mackinac. Fires crackle in stone hearths. The smell of treats and warm beverages fill the crisp winter air. Laughter\, conversation\, and more can be heard emanating from inside the palisaded walls. SUMMARY:Discover Sugar Loaf\, a Mackinac National Park: 150 Event
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalist Kyle Bagnall on a guided walk to explore one of Mackinac Island’s oldest and most iconic rock formations. In August 1894\, Major Clarence Bennet issued a warning to guests of Mackinac National Park – anyone found guilty of defacing Sugar Loaf would be expelled from the park! On this two-mile walk\, we’ll explore the geology and celebrity of this famous attraction\, even uncovering evidence of 19th century vandalism. Meet at the Avenue of Flags\, behind Fort Mackinac for an easy walk of about two miles. #thisismackinac

SUMMARY:Lost Rocks & Mackinac Millstones
DESCRIPTION:While limestone formations are famous at Mackinac\, other geological wonders lie hidden underfoot. This week\, special programs highlight the grist mill which once ground grain into flour at Historic Mill Creek. Our millstones were hewn from “lost rocks\,” boulders deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago. Learn what evidence of milling has been found here\, how the process worked\, and what grains were grown at the Straits of Mackinac. Also enjoy a lost rock scavenger hunt along the trails. All special programs included with regular admission. #thisismackinac
