Fort Mackinac Health and Safety Guidelines

We care about your health and safety. 

We are very excited to welcome guests to Fort Mackinac for the 2020 season. The health and safety of our visitors and staff is our primary concern. To ensure that everyone’s experience is enjoyable, all guests and staff must follow the following guidelines when visiting Fort Mackinac:

  • Please do not enter the site if you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19, are experiencing a cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat right now, or have experienced symptoms such as a fever, lost of taste or smell, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever in the last 48 hours.
  • A face mask must be worn in all interior locations.
  • Please maintain a safe distance of at least six feet between your group and employees and other visitors near you.
  • Hand-sanitizing stations are located at key locations (see below). Please use them frequently.
  • Wash hands more frequently, avoid touching your face, and practice good respiratory etiquette including sneezing into your elbow.
  • The number of guests allowed inside some areas is limited (see below). Please follow guidelines posted at the entrance to each building.

Physical Distancing and Limited Contact: 

  • Please maintain at least six feet of distance between your group and staff or other groups.
  • Follow posted floor markings or signs to maintain safe social distance.
  • Plexiglass barriers have been installed at admissions and sales counters.
  • We encourage you to purchase tickets in advance – tickets are available here.
  • The use of credit or debit cards is highly encouraged for purchases made on site for the most contactless experience.

Building and Site Capacity/Guidelines:

Cannon Firing Demonstration

  • A social distance of six feet is required between your group and other groups and staff.
  • A mask is required while at the cannon platform

Rifle Firing Demonstrations/Parade Ground

  • Benches will be spread out or removed on the Soldier’s Barracks Porch and on the Parade Ground to allow for social distancing.
  • Masks are required if you are within six feet of a guest outside your immediate party or staff member.
  • Staff will maintain social distancing during demonstrations.

Buildings within the fort

  • Masks are required within any buildings.
  • Please maintain a safe social distance of least six feet from other groups or staff.
  • The Commissary is closed until further notice.
  • The following buildings will have a designated entrance/exit, which will be clearly marked:
    • Hill Quarters
    • Mackinac: An Island Famous in these Regions Exhibit (second floor of Soldier’s Barracks)
    • A Desirable Station Exhibit (first floor of Soldier’s Barracks)
  • The back door of the Post Hospital will be open daily.
  • Dress-up area in Kids’ Quarters is suspended for 2020 season.
  • Handsets will be removed and replaced with speakers where available.

Sutler’s Store

  • A mask is required while inside Sutler’s Store.
  • Please maintain a safe social distance of at least six feet from other groups or staff.
  • A plexiglass barrier has been added to the sales counter.
  • Displays have been consolidated and/or removed to allow for easier movement within the store.

Tea Room Restaurant

The Tea Room is operated by Grand Hotel. The set up of the space allows for easy one-way traffic into and out of the restaurant. As soon as we receive guidelines from Grand Hotel we will post them here.

Cleaning Schedule:

In addition to regular, frequent sanitizing of admissions and sales counters, exhibits, and restrooms, we have outlined a more detailed cleaning schedule for Fort Mackinac.

South Sally Port and Avenue of Flags Admission Areas

Members of the guest services staff will be equipped with cleaning supplies at their stations and will regularly sanitize their work station and surrounding area.

Within the fort

Members of the guest services staff and interpretive staff will be equipped with cleaning supplies and will have a regular cleaning schedule within the fort, especially within buildings and the Sutler’s Store. Additionally, a member of the Park Operations janitorial staff is assigned to Fort Mackinac and will rotate through the fort cleaning and sanitizing all areas, with special attention on high-touch areas.

  • A complete cleaning/disinfecting will be completed by park janitorial staff daily prior to opening
  • Common touch points disinfected every hour on top of regular cleaning, focusing on high-traffic areas such as the Mackinac: An Island Famous in these Regions exhibit, Post Hospital, Office and Quartermaster’s Storehouse, Guardhouse, Wood Quarters, among others.
  • The Kids’ Quarters will be sanitized every 30 minutes by park janitorial staff.

Restrooms

Fort Mackinac’s restrooms are located on the rear of the Soldier’s Barracks. Push plates, door handles, sinks, hand driers, faucets, and toilet handles, among other areas, will be sanitized every hour

  • Restrooms will be closed for deep cleaning and sanitizing four times a day:
    • Prior to opening
    • 11:30 a.m.
    • 1:00 p.m.
    • 3:30 p.m.
    • Additional times if needed
  • Where appropriate doors will be pinned open to limit contact.
  • Cleaning done by Park Operation janitorial staff
