‘The Role of Needlework Samplers in Early American Femail Education’ will discuss a brief history of needlework and how it went from a daily activity based on need, to an educational tool, to a hobby craft enjoyed millions, and finally to a contemporary artform. The presentation will review the many different types of needlework (cross stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, etc.), how it was used for educational purposes, and its impact on early American decorative arts. This program will take place in the Station 256 Conference Room, located above the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor’s Center. Admission is free.
