Information Technology Assistant

Scope of Duties:

Ideal candidate will assist the Chief of Finance and Accounting in supporting the IT and Technology needs of the staff at all the historic sites within Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP). Duties will include daily support and troubleshooting for computers and technology for our Point-of-Sale (POS) museum retail stores, admission stations and employee workstations at all the park locations; handling routine technology support questions, printer issues, conducting a complete physical inventory of computers and peripherals throughout the organization; password resets, troubleshooting network and credit card machine connectivity issues, supporting guest services representatives at sites when they encounter IT issues, working on support tickets with POS Software provider, executing software updates when needed. Based on the individual’s interests and skills, the IT assistant will also have opportunities to participate with other facets of the business.  This position will receive training and introductions to all 3rd party off-site support contacts.

This seasonal position is not officially an internship, however, if summer internship credit is desired for college, the Chief Financial Officer is open to reviewing your college’s requirement to make the position internship and college credit eligible.


  1. Learn and provide technology support for Point-of-Sale computers for stores and site admissions at all MSHP locations.
  2. Proactively handle routine staff requests for technology questions such as printer issues, etc.
  3. Document the complete inventory of computers and peripherals and other technology throughout the organization.
  4. Always act in a professional manner and keep information that is learned confidential.
  5. Other duties as needed.

Position Requirements:

  1. IT, Network and/or Business experience, and/or currently pursuing a college degree in this field.
  2. Must be available from early May through August, however, some flexibility on dates and hours is possible.
  3. Must have good attention to detail; flexibility; helpful attitude and willingness to contact various support lines for help.
  4. Ability to work independently, take ownership, be a self-starter and work well in a team.

Work Location and Schedule:
The workstation for this position is Mackinaw City with travel to all MSHP historic sites, including Mackinac Island. Essential functions of this position require indoor and outdoor work. This position will generally work from early May through the end of August,with some flexibility and is scheduled to work 32-40 hours per week. The IT Technology Assistant may be required to work evenings, holidays and/or weekends, on occasion, if necessary.

Physical Requirements:
This position will require the employee to be active and occasionally outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without, reasonable accommodation: walking, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time, frequent lifting, carrying, transporting, loading and unloading of up to 35 lbs. and walking up and down steep inclines and steps. In order to carry out the duties, the intern may encounter frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping. The employee must have the ability to utilize ferry boat transportation to and from Mackinac Island.

Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees in the public service to promote a productive and safe work environment and to maintain MSHP’s public image. Employees are required to be in approved park dress code at all times while on duty, which includes the wearing of proper footwear.  Violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

This position does not supervise other employees. The employee works under the direction of the Chief of Finance and Accounting.
