Information Technology Assistant

Scope of Duties:
Ideal candidate will assist the Chief of Finance and Accounting in supporting the IT and Technology needs of the staff at all of the historic sites within Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP). Duties will include learning and supporting the computers and technology for the stores sales and admissions to all the park locations; handling routine technology support questions, printer issues, etc; updating the documentation of the complete inventory of computers and peripherals throughout the organization; document (flowchart) the configuration of the complex network of State of Michigan computers with an independent network; assisting with investigating, documenting and implementing new phone system. Based on the individual’s interests and skills and MSHP needs, the assistant may also have opportunities to participate with other facets of the business.

This position could be set up as an internship if the candidate needs internship credit.


  • Learn and provide technology support for Point of Sale computers for stores and site admissions at all MSHP locations.
  • Handle routine staff requests for technology questions such as printer issues, etc.
  • Update the documentation of the complete inventory of computers and peripherals and other technology throughout the entire organization.
  • Update the document (flowchart) the configuration of the complex network of State of Michigan computers with an independent network.
  • Assist with investigating, documenting and implementing new phone system.
  • Other duties as needed.
  • Always act in a professional manner and keep information that is learned as confidential.

Position Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older as of start date of employment.
  • IT, Network and/or Business background.
  • Must be available from late April or early May through late August, (Prefer late April to late September) however, some flexibility on dates and hours.
  • Must have good attention to detail; flexibility; helpful attitude and willingness to contact various support lines for help.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in team.

Work Location and Schedule:
The workstation for this position is Mackinaw City with travel to all MSHP historic sites, including Mackinac Island. Essential functions of this position require indoor and outdoor work. This position will generally work from late April or early May through the end of August, (with preferred schedule to extend to late September) with some flexibility and is scheduled to work 32-40 hours per week for up to 22 weeks. The IT Technology Assistant may be required to work evenings, holidays and/or weekends, on occasion, if necessary.

Physical Requirements:
This position will require the employee to be active and occasionally outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The employee must have the ability to do the following activities, with or without, reasonable accommodation: walking, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time, frequent lifting, carrying, transporting, loading and unloading of up to 35 lbs. and walking up and down steep inclines and steps. In order to carry out the duties, the intern may encounter frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping. The employee must have the ability to utilize ferry boat transportation to and from Mackinac Island.

Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees in the public service to promote a productive and safe work environment and to maintain MSHP’s public image.  This means no inappropriate hairstyles, jewelry, clothing or fashion statements are allowed.  Employees are required to be in approved park dress code at all times while on duty, which includes the wearing of proper footwear.  Violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

This position does not supervise other employees. The employee works under the direction of the Chief of Finance and Accounting.

General Position Information:
This is a temporary seasonal at-will position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include recall rights or benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws). This position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season and the employee does not have recall rights to this or any other MSHP position in the future. Specifically, the park is under no obligation to hire the individual in subsequent seasons. The number of weeks and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate. Additional information will be provided upon employment.
