Colonial Michilimackinac Health and Safety Guidelines

We care about your health and safety. 

We are very excited to welcome guests to Colonial Michilimackinac for the 2020 season. The health and safety of our visitors and staff is our primary concern. To ensure that everyone’s experience is enjoyable, all guests and staff must follow the following guidelines when visiting Colonial Michilimackinac and our Visitor’s Center:

  • Please do not enter the site if you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19, are experiencing a cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat right now, or have experienced symptoms such as a fever, lost of taste or smell, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever in the last 48 hours.
  • A face mask must be worn in all interior locations.
  • Please maintain a safe distance of at least six feet between your group and employees and other visitors near you.
  • Hand-sanitizing stations are located at key locations (see below). Please use them frequently.
  • Wash hands more frequently, avoid touching your face, and practice good respiratory etiquette including sneezing into your elbow.
  • The number of guests allowed inside some areas is limited (see below). Please follow guidelines posted at the entrance to each building.

Physical Distancing and Limited Contact: 

  • Please maintain at least six feet of distance between your group and staff or other groups.
  • Follow posted floor markings or signs to maintain safe social distance.
  • Plexiglass barriers have been installed at admissions and sales counters.
  • We encourage you to purchase tickets in advance – tickets are available here.
  • The use of credit or debit cards is highly encouraged for purchases made on site for the most contactless experience.

  • Visitor’s Center (2)
  • King’s Storehouse
  • British Trader’s House/Treasures from the Sand Exhibit Entrance
  • Hearthside Store

Building and Site Capacity/Guidelines:

Visitor’s Center

  • Capacity: 50
  • A mask is required within the Visitor’s Center.
  • Entrance doors are clearly marked with “Entrance” and Exit” signs. Upon entering, you will be directed to either the admissions counter or to the museum store.
  • Plexiglass barriers have been installed at the admissions counter and at the museum store sales counter.
  • Please follow the floor markings to maintain safe social distance.
  • Upon exiting Colonial Michilimackinac for the day an option will be available to exit without re-entering the Visitor’s Center.
  • Electronic site maps and schedules of events are available via a QR code at the admissions counter.
  • Displays have been consolidated or removed to allow for freer movement within the Visitor’s Center.

Native Encampment

  • No visitors will be allowed in the shelters.
  • Kid’s Rendezvous to remain closed at this time.

Artillery and Musket Demonstrations

  • Crowds will be asked to maintain social distance during artillery demonstrations, and our program will be adjusted to allow for social distance for our interpretive staff.
  • Masks are required if you are within six feet of a guest outside your immediate party or staff member.
  • Seating will be spread out on the parade ground for musket and other demonstrations.

Buildings within the fort

  • Masks are required within any buildings.
  • Please maintain a safe social distance of least six feet from other groups or staff.
  • Most buildings will have a capacity of 10 or less people.
  • Select seating in Kings’ Storehouse will be removed.
  • All rope barriers will be left up.
  • Touchable objects will not be available at this time.
  • All interior demonstrations have been suspended. New programs have been developed to replace them – see the schedule here.
  • Clothes within the interactive area of the Soldier’s Barracks have been removed, and the bunks will not be available.
  • Handsets for audio presentations have been replaced with speakers.

Hearthside Store

  • Capacity: 25
  • A mask is required while inside the Hearthside Store.
  • Please maintain a safe social distance of at least six feet from other groups or staff.
  • A plexiglass barrier has been added to the sales counter.
  • Displays have been consolidated and/or removed to allow for easier movement within the store.

Cleaning Schedule:

In addition to regular, frequent sanitizing of admissions and sales counters, exhibits, and restrooms, we have outlined a more detailed cleaning schedule for Colonial Michilimackinac.

Visitor’s Center

Members of the guest services staff will be equipped with cleaning supplies at their stations and will regularly sanitize their work station and surrounding area. In addition:

  • A complete cleaning/disinfecting will be completed by park janitorial staff daily prior to opening.
  • Common touch points disinfected every hour on top of regular cleaning. This includes doors, counters, handrails, credit card machines, etc.
  • Park Operations will conduct a more thorough disinfecting in the early afternoon.

Within the fort

Members of the guest services staff and interpretive staff will be equipped with cleaning supplies and will have a regular cleaning schedule within the fort, especially within buildings and the Hearthside Store. In addition:

  • A complete cleaning/disinfecting will be completed by park janitorial staff daily prior to opening
  • Common Touch Points disinfected every hour on top of regular cleaning.
  • Park Operations will conduct a more thorough disinfecting in the afternoon

Restrooms

Colonial Michilimackinac has three sets of restrooms: outside the Visitor’s Center, within the fort inside the South Southwest Rowhouse, and outside the Land Gate. Push plates and door handles will additionally be sanitized during regular cleaning of the site.

  • Restrooms will be cleaned, disinfected and sanitized at least four times a day.
    • Prior to opening for a deep clean/disinfect/sanitize
    • Late Morning – All touch points, faucets, soap dispensers as well as regular upkeep
    • Early Afternoon – Temporarily closed for complete cleaning/disinfecting
    • Late Afternoon/early evening – All touch points, faucets, soap dispensers as well as regular upkeep
  • Where appropriate doors will be pinned open to limit contact.
  • Cleaning done by Park Operation janitorial staff
