Checklist of the Birds of Mackinac Island
This checklist includes all bird species observed on Mackinac Island or in the surrounding waters of the Straits of Mackinac. List contains over 160 species.
Birds can be observed in a variety of habitats in the park: The northern hardwood forest, which covers much of the park’s interior; Lowland conifer forests near the shoreline and in damp areas throughout the park; Open areas, such as the fields and meadows near the airport, and Wawashkamo golf course; Wetlands, such as Croghan’s Water marsh.
Example of birds observed on Mackinac Island: Horned Grebe, Tundra Swan, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Black-billed Cuckoo, Whip-poor-will, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Purple Martin, Eastern Bluebird, Bohemian Waxwing, Magnolia Warbler, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Northern Oriole, Purple Finch
