Chevalier House- Powder Magazine and firearms on the frontier

Enter through the Chevalier House

After the British moved Fort Michilimackinac to Mackinac Island in 1779-1781, they burned the structures they could not move. British soldiers set fire to the underground powder magazine, but the roof caved in and smothered the fire, leaving a well-preserved ruin. The wood and timbers of the original powder magazine remain for you to see as you explore this underground exhibit. The Firearms on the Frontier exhibit showcases many of the weapons British and French soldiers and civilians used for hunting and warfare.
