Mackinac Island Downtown Buildings History
Mackinac Island once served as a critical distribution center for the 19th-century fur trade in North America.
Today, in the downtown area of the island, you can experience a mix of fascinating history, interactive displays, and memorable demonstrations at several buildings that played a part in the fur trade--including the American Fur Company Store & Dr. Beaumont Museum, Biddle House, and Benjamin Blacksmith Shop--as well as the architecturally significant McGulpin House and Mission Church. Together, these five structures contributed greatly to Mackinac Island's designation as a National Historic Landmark.
