Governor G. Mennen Williams Tea Service

This tea service was presented to Governor and Mrs. G. Mennen Williams by the Democratic Women of Wayne County in 1950.  It was used at their home in Lansing and at the Governor’s Summer Residence on Mackinac Island.  Governor Williams served from 1949 to 1960.

The Governor’s Residence was built as a summer cottage by Chicago lawyer Lawrence Young in 1902.  In 1944, the Mackinac Island State Park Commission purchased the home for use as an executive summer residence.  The Commission  provides the care and maintenance of the house and surrounding gardens.  Since 1945 Michigan’s governors have used this beautiful and functional home to host important events with many national and state leaders.
