Historic Geary House for Rent on Mackinac Island
Visitors to Mackinac Island have the opportunity to live in the historic Geary House, for rent on a monthly (May – October) basis. The historic 1846 Matthew Geary House, managed by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, has been a popular Mackinac Island rental cottage for many years.
Located on Market Street near downtown Mackinac Island, this two-story home has an important past. It was the home to Matthew Geary, one of the first Irish immigrants to live on Mackinac Island at the onset of the large Irish immigration to the United States. In the 1840s, Geary worked as a cooper making barrels for the island’s fishing industry, the mainstay of the economy after the lucrative fur trade moved west. He served as fish inspector during the following decade. In the 1860s-1870’s, Geary served as a lighthouse keeper.
The well-maintained cottage is smoke-free and pet-friendly. It contains a kitchen, living room, dining room, sunroom, and four bedrooms: one queen, one double, and two with two twin beds. There are also laundry facilities, a deck, and a basement for storing bicycles. In addition, the property features a hilly yard. Monthly rates vary between $3,000 - $5,000, depending on the month. The months of May and August-October are still available for 2010. Contact Sheryl Baxter at (231) 436-4100 for more information or to rent the home.
The historic Steward's Quarters, located beside Fort Mackinac on a bluff overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, is rented for the 2010 season but available for rent May - October on a monthly or seasonal basis for 2011. Contact Sheryl Baxter for more information or to rent the home.
