Rifle Firing Demonstrations

Not only will you hear the rifle fire and smell the smoke! Costumed historic interpreters (1880's American soldiers) will discuss their uniforms and rifles, explaining the different parts and why they were used or worn. After the demonstration, come down from your seats under the covered Soldiers' Barracks and ask questions. You can even hold the rifle!

Cannon Firing Demonstrations

Volunteers will be called to help prepare the cannon for fire simulation. Each aspect of preparing it will be explained, and you'll shout "Ready, Aim, Fire!" just as the costumed historic interpreters (1880's American soldiers) fire it over the Straits of Mackinac.

Soldiers' Life Tours/ Children's Programs

Gain insight into the lives of the 1880s American soldier at Fort Mackinac during your 30 minute soldier life tour through the fort. Lead by a costumed, historic interpreter, you'll learn fascinating facts that can only be heard by participating in the tour. Children receive their own short tour by a costumed, historic interpreter dressed as a Victorian lady. The tour is geared towards children, and is very interactive. It ends by participating in Victorian children's games, including graces and hoop and ball.

Music at Mackinac Program and Dance

Learn about music at Fort Mackinac when a variety of interpreters perform for you with music from the 1880s. Afterwards, to live music, you'll learn and participate in the popular Victorian Rose Dance.

Court Martial Reenactment

Real life Fort Mackinac court martial cases are reenacted in front of the Soldiers' Barracks. Listen to the witnesses, hear the defense of the accused, and vote your mind. Innocent or guilty? The judge will make the final decision.  All reenactments are based on historical accounts!
