Scope of Duties:
The archaeology crew member is responsible for carrying out all aspects of excavation and recording of the archaeological site under the direction of the curator of archaeology and the archaeology field supervisor.  This position serves visitors to Mackinac State Historic Parks by carrying out the above duties and providing public interpretation of the archaeology site.

Work Location and Schedule:
The workstation for this position is Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City, although the employee may be asked to work at other MISPC sites as needed.  It is expected that the position will work early June to late August, five days a week for 40 hours per week and will be on an 8:30am to 5:00pm rotating work schedule which may include weekends and holidays.  The archaeology crew member will have a 30 minute lunchtime.  The number of weeks, days and hours worked may vary as park needs dictate.

Responsibilities:
1.  Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs.
2.  Performs excavating, water screening, note taking and mapping of assigned area.
3.  Provides interpretation of archaeology to park guests.
4.  Assists with care and storage of equipment.
5.  Washes and packages artifacts in lab (rain day activity).
6.  Assists with photography, survey and other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
1.  Previous archaeology training, as demonstrated by field school or recommendation by professional archaeologist.
2.  Ability to do informal public interpretation.
3.  Ability to work with other archaeology team members, both professional and volunteer.
4.  Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
5.  High school graduate and a minimum of 18 years of age.
6.  Training in historical archaeology and/or 18th century material culture is desired.

Physical Requirements:
The employee must have the ability to do the following activities with or without reasonable accommodation:  the ability to speak before the public, walking over uneven terrain, kneeling, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time and carrying/lifting items up to 35 pounds.  In order to carry out the duties, the archaeology crew member will encounter frequent twisting, bending, stooping, reaching and grasping.  The employee may be exposed to various weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and rain; the employee must be able to work outside in those weather conditions.

Dress Code:
The park maintains a dress code for employees in the public service to promote a productive and safe work environment and to maintain MSHP’s public image.  This means no inappropriate hairstyles, jewelry, clothing or fashion statements are allowed; further information regarding the archaeology dress code will be shared with the employee upon employment.  MSHP will provide the necessary uniform pieces which must be returned at the end of seasonal employment.  Please note that violation of the dress code may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

Supervision:
The archaeology crew member does not supervise other employees; the employee works under the direction of the curator of archaeology and/or the archaeology field supervisor.

General Position Information:
Paydays are biweekly (every two weeks).  This position is a temporary  seasonal position which serves at the will of the employer and does not include fringe benefits (other than those mandated by governmental laws).  It is anticipated that this position will work early June to late August and that the position will expire at the time employment is ended for the season.  Additional information will be provided to you upon your employment.  Employee does not have any “recall” rights to any position with Mackinac State Historic Parks.  Shared subsidized housing available.
