Checklist of the Wildflowers of Mackinac Island

Checklist of the Wildflowers of Mackinac Island

During the past 200 years amateur and professional botanists have identified more than 600 species of wild plants on Mackinac Island. Less than half of those species are considered wildflowers. This checklist includes 270 species of “wildflowers” that are presently found on Mackinac Island.

In this checklist we included all of the island’s wild plants that are considered to be wildflowers in today’s popular field guides. The common names listed here are those most generally used in Michigan, and the scientific or botanical names are those accepted by botanists worldwide.

Examples of wildflowers found on Mackinac Island: Trillium, Sticky False Asphodel, Dwarf Lake Iris, Lady Slipper, Wild Columbine, Dutchman’s-breeches, Silverweed, Everlasting Pea, Hollyhock, Hound’s-tongue, Catnip, Black-eyed Susan, Pussytoes, and Indian Pipe
